PLUME™ works with established professional perfumers and reputable fragrance manufacturers whose work is supported by technical documentation and recognized industry safety practices. Our fragrance oils are phthalate-free, and we maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and applicable IFRA documentation for the fragrances we offer.

Fragrance oils are concentrated materials created for incorporation into finished products; they are not intended to be used undiluted. Appropriate usage levels vary considerably depending upon the finished application. We therefore encourage every maker using PLUME™ fragrance to review the applicable IFRA guidance and safety documentation and to formulate, manufacture, label and use products appropriately for their intended application.

The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Standards are a globally recognized, science-based risk-management system for the safe use of fragrance ingredients. These standards may restrict, establish specifications for, or prohibit particular fragrance materials and establish appropriate use levels according to application.

It is also important to understand the distinction between hazard information and actual exposure or risk. Safety Data Sheets are technical hazard-communication documents for concentrated chemical mixtures and contain information necessary for their safe handling, storage, and occupational use. Hazard classifications appearing on an SDS should be considered in the context of concentration, route of exposure, intended application and the composition of the finished product. They should not be interpreted in isolation as a prediction that a properly formulated finished product will cause a particular health outcome.

Our responsibility does not end with documentation or minimum compliance. PLUME™ continually evaluates our fragrance library as scientific information, industry standards, regulatory requirements, and fragrance technology evolve. We may choose to reformulate, replace or discontinue a fragrance when we believe a newer formulation better reflects our internal standards—even when an existing formulation remains permissible for its intended use.

We are a company built upon deeply held values, including respect for human life and the well-being of the people and families who purchase, formulate with, and enjoy our fragrances. We would never knowingly disregard credible safety information for the sake of selling a fragrance. When credible new information becomes available, we take it seriously, review the available science and technical documentation, consult our manufacturing partners when appropriate, and make thoughtful decisions accordingly.

For us, responsible fragrance means neither ignoring legitimate safety information nor creating unnecessary fear around chemistry. It means understanding the science, respecting appropriate usage levels, working with qualified fragrance professionals, and continually holding our library to a high standard.

An Atmospheric Scent Study is an independently developed interpretation composed to closely echo the defining scent profile, balance, and recognizable character of a well-known fragrance. Its creative purpose is fidelity—offering makers a familiar olfactory experience through the PLUME™ lens.

A PLUME™ Derivative begins with a recognized fragrance as an olfactory point of departure, then intentionally changes direction. Notes may be added, removed, softened, intensified, or rebalanced until the composition develops its own character, dimension, and atmosphere. Familiar echoes may remain—and the connection may still be recognizable—but close fidelity to the reference fragrance is no longer the objective.

Simply put: a Scent Study closely interprets the fragrance being studied; a PLUME™ Derivative uses that fragrance as the beginning of an entirely new story.

Yes. PLUME™ evaluates every fragrance in one or more representative
applications before adding it to our library. Applications vary by fragrance
profile and may include candles, linen wash, room fragrance, or other
common maker uses.
These evaluations assess fragrance performance. They do not guarantee
compatibility, regulatory compliance, stability, or results in every formula,
base, manufacturing process, or finished product. Customers remain
responsible for testing their own formulations.

Every fragrance offered by PLUME™ is evaluated for performance before being added to our library. Testing may include candles, linen wash, room fragrance applications, or other common maker uses depending on the fragrance profile.

IFRA documentation addresses specified fragrance uses and concentration limits. It does not replace finished-product testing, a product safety assessment, or compliance with applicable federal, state, or local requirements.

Our fragrance oils are manufactured and distributed in the United States and are accompanied by professional documentation for maker use. 

Calculating fragrance oil usage is simple once you have determined your designed fragrance load. At PLUME™, we test our fragrance oils in candles at a 9% fragrance load, as we have found this to be an excellent starting point for evaluating both hot throw and cold throw performance across our wax system. However, the ideal usage rate will vary depending on your wax, vessel, wick, and desired scent strength.
