Lychee & Peony

The name of the hotel escapes me. It was a quaint place tucked beside an old rooftop observatory. From the moment I arrived, it felt safe and strangely familiar, as though the walls still held the lives and stories that had passed through them.

Pink peonies grew in extraordinary abundance, so perfectly at home that it seemed the observatory had been built around them. I remember their pale, unruly blooms with rain caught between layers of petals. As the storm lifted, their fragrance rose into the cool night air, mingling with the bright, sparkling scent of lychee. The air felt luminous, floral and alive.

The hotel lights dimmed, revealing the open sky. One by one, meteors appeared above me, brief flashes of light crossing a darkness that felt almost heavenly. I stood in awe, as though I had been allowed, for a moment, to glimpse another world.

Time has taken the name of the hotel and the route that led me there. But not the peonies. Not their fragrance after the rain. Not the impossible sky above that old observatory, created by a beauty far greater than me.
